Chapter 5

GINGER FROST

I must be out of my mind, dreaming, or straight up dope head delusional. I'd made some stupid decisions in my life but this here took the cake.

As Legend and I stood inside this upscale jewelry store in the middle of downtown Jubilee, a million thoughts ran through my head.

Legend was making this hard for me to realize that our union was only a sham. From the way he looked at me, to the way he touched me, and talked to me, you'd think he really felt some type of way about me.

But, why wouldn't he play his part well? Technically, he needed me. Well, he needed a wife. I was just loony enough to let him fuck me into a yes. I wouldn't be surprised if once we said our I dos this man turned into the devil. After all, hadn't he already admitted to being the devil himself?

Lord, I truly had lost it. I should've left well enough alone and not have challenged him. He would still be either Avery and I would still be...doing whatever sane people do. Not standing here looking at expensive ass rings, feeling like royalty. I had to get this notion out of my head that this was all real.

The rock nestled on my finger was like an anvil, big, solid, and heavy. It was really too much both visually and financially. However, it looked good on me.

"When's the big day?" The jeweler asked after he'd completed his sale. His smile rivaled Kool-Aid’s.

"Four weeks, Christmas day," Legend provided.

I cringed, because damn. Four weeks would skate by in the blink of an eye. Soon, I'd be Legend's wife.

After we left the jewelers, Legend informed me that we had one more stop to make before going to his parent's house. He could make as many stops as he wanted to stave off me officially meeting his family. The elder Sneaux seemed cool, however, Legend's mother reminded me of a task master at an all girl's school.

As beautiful as Mrs. Sneaux was, I could tell she didn't play the radio. Being the mother of a man like Legend who was groomed by his father told me what type of woman Mrs. Sneaux was. Only a strong woman could assume the role she played. Did that mean Legend actually saw me in the same light?

He talked a good ass game, but as I reflected, truth smacked me in my face. This marriage thing may be a sham, but Legend having enough faith in me to be his queen spoke volumes, uplifting my confidence.

"Whatever just put that smile on ya face, I love it." Legend caught my chin, turning me towards him until we soulfully kissed.

It was a smile of hope. Something I hadn't possessed in forever.

Minutes later we pulled into the parking lot of the Mercedes Benz dealership. Instinctively, thoughts of my Mercedes flooded my mind. Brushing back the negativity, I let Legend take my hand and help me out of the car. For it to be Sunday, I was surprised the dealership was open.
